A smaller painting of Redemption was featured in Discipleship Journal’s magazine. They approached several artists to do paintings on the theme of Redemption, and share their thoughts. Here are mine:

When I was offered this assignment, I thought I had a pretty good understanding of what the word redemption meant. But as I started looking up related scriptures, questions from long ago returned: Why did God have to buy us back? Who stole us away? Why did there have to be blood and death?  While I don’t know if these questions will ever be completely resolved in my mind, one truth kept coming back to me - I am incapable of redeeming myself.

When it came time to put paint to paper, the old masters’ paintings and sculptures with their emotional, expressive gures came to mind. I wanted to capture some of the feeling of Michelangelo’s sculpture The Dying Slave. I chose to portray a bound figure who was being set free by birds. Birds have been making their way into my paintings a lot lately, and they seem such an unlikely source of redemption.
